De-Funking Skunk Odors

Home » Instructions/Recipes » De-Funking Skunk Odors

Skunk spray is composed mainly of three low-molecular-weight thiol compounds, (E)-2-butene-1-thiol, 3-methyl-1-butanethiol, and 2-quinolinemethanethiol, as well as acetate thioesters of these. These compounds are detectable by the human nose at concentrations of only 10 parts per billion. In plain English, this means that skunk spray is oil based and should be removed with the “Close/Open/Close” technique. Follow the “recipe” below.

Products Recommended:

KS Anti-Smell Shampoo, Black Cherry Conditioner, PEK Conditioner, K101, Ginkgo Oil and PH Balance.
(Note: for extremely bad cases use Purifying Shampoo also in the shampoo process.)

1

Pre-soak (CLOSE)

Black Cherry Conditioner, K101, Ginkgo Oil, and PEK Conditioner. Froth together with a small amount of water in a plastic bowl until well mixed. Push mixture into the dry coat of affected areas. Let sit for 15 to 20 minutes then rinse well.

2

Cleanse (OPEN)

KS Anti-Smell Shampoo and Ginkgo Oil. Use normal dilution ratios (1 part shampoo to 3 parts water). Froth and apply all over dog. Soak 15 minutes then rinse well.
Re-apply KS Anti-Smell Shampoo full strength and let sit for 10 minutes then rinse really well.

3

Hydrate (CLOSE)

PH Balance and Black Cherry Conditioner. Use generous amount of PH Balance and Black Cherry Conditioner with normal dilution ratios (1:3) to replace natural oils that were washed away. Let soak for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse.
Other oils can be added to the final conditioning stage including: K101, Ginkgo Oil, Ozonized Olive Oil and Black Passion Argan Oil. Style as usual.
